PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

This program will offer a unique look into how small business owners can better manage their daily struggles with everyday employment issues stemming from hiring, policies and procedures, employee handbooks, wage and hour issues, disciplining employees and handling the difficult task of termination. the program will cover the following:

  • The “New Hire” – Independent Contractor or Employee?
  • wage/Hour Pitfalls: why Should I Pay Overtime?
  • How to Terminate and Avoid Risk

SPEAKERS

San Francisco Program Speaker: Paula Champagne - Littler Mendelson, P.C., San Francisco

Ms. Champagne advises and represents clients in employment discrimination and wrongful termination. Her clients include financial institutions, healthcare providers, biotechnology companies, manufacturers and non-profits. She represents employers in litigation before federal and state courts, as well as before federal and state agencies such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH). She also works with employers in reviews of personnel policies and employee handbooks.

Ms. Champagne believes that claims of discrimination, sexual harassment and wrongful termination are preventable and therefore invests a considerable amount of time providing in-house training and seminars to managers and supervisors. She also writes and speaks to these subjects throughout the year to chambers, business coalitions, employer associations and in the Firm’s annual two-day “The Employer
Conference”.

Ms. Champagne is active in the California State Bar, the San Francisco Bar Association, and the American Bar Association. Since 1995 she has been a Board Member with “Stepping Stones Growth Center”. She received her J.D. from the University of Santa Clara and graduated magna cum laude. Previously she received her Bachelor of Arts degree from California State University, Long Beach.

Los Angeles Program Speaker: Joshua Feldman - Littler Mendelson, P.C., Los Angeles

Mr. Feldman advises and represents employers in a broad range of workplace law matters, including labor and employment matters arising under federal and state law. Prior to joining Littler in 2005, Mr. Feldman’s practice included complex construction, real estate and business litigation matters with experience in federal, state and alternative dispute resolution proceedings.

Mr. Feldman received his J.D. from the University of San Diego School of Law and his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara. while in law school, he served as an extern for the Honorable Philip M. Pro in the United States District Court, District of Nevada and the Honorable Napoleon A. Jones, Jr. in the United States District Court, Southern District of California.

Mr. Feldman’s emphasis is in the litigation of employment matters. He published “A Falling Out Between Attorneys Leads to Tort Liability” in Volume XXVII of the Association of Business Trial Lawyers Report (Fall 2004). He is active with both the California State Bar and the Los Angeles County Bar Association.
